Horizons adult education centre 'bank' brilliant results
Horizons Adult Community Learning Project are celebrating record GCSE and NVQ results this Friday 16th October with a visit from Barclays Bank who have supported their endeavours with a donation of £100,000.
The donation arose from Barclays’ decision to close some of their Hastings operations. Following an initiative from and Sea Space and Michael Foster MP, they agreed to provide financial support for local good causes. SEEDA matched the funding with an extra £100,000.
The extra funding has enabled Horizons to set up a special Trust which will hopefully help them keep up their good work for years to come.
Sonia Plato, manager of the project says:
““We have had great GCSE and NVQ results this year. We also have had many students moving into employment or voluntary opportunities which is great for them and for the community. ”
16 learners successfully took GCSE English with 81% achieving A-C grades.
33 learners took Maths GCSE with 45% achieving A-C. 100% A-C grades for Science GCSE results. 14 NVQ 2 Childcare adults also achieved 100% success.
“Strong results mean better employment opportunities and encouragement for others to start learning. We have been inundated with adults wanting to gain skills and qualifications who are encouraged by the success of others. ”
says Sonia. Michael Foster MP added:
“I very much supported Barclays funding for this valuable service. It makes a real difference to people who for many reasons may have missed out on further education but who want to get back into learning and just need encouragement and help to do so.”
Attending the celebrations will be John Shaw and Alan Blackwell from Sea Space, Michael Foster MP, Danny Reardon from Barclays Bank, Pam Coare, Director at Centre for Community Engagement, University of Sussex and Gwen Shine, Chairperson of the Friends of Horizons.
Horizons have been in operation for 14 years and currently run over 50 free courses, with free childcare, offering many starting points to learning in community venues across the town.
